Several students and faculty members debuted on radio airwaves when WBAL's """"The Chip Franklin Show"""" came to the Towson Center Friday morning. The event was held to promote WBAL's airing of Towson men's basketball; but Student Government President Darcy Accardi said it was more than a promotional opportunity. """"It's publicity on the outside, but it's also cool for our students to get on the air. It's getting them outside experience...and they feel more tied to campus. It's a school spirit thing,"""" she said. And though Accardi said it was difficult to get student attendance on a Friday morning, she thought the panel was """"happy with the student involvement"""" as the show encouraged opinions from the 30- member audience. In interviews with The Towerlight Friday, representatives from the TUPD and Housing and Residence Life would not reveal how the two suspects entered the building, or whether they even know the means of entry. The suspects are still at large. When asked about possible methods of entry or progress in the case, Captain Joe Herring stated, """"I cannot comment on the investigation."""" Herring would not say if the suspects signed in at the front desk or if they accessed the building through the side exit doors. He would not discuss any progress made on the investigation. He also would not comment on how many police officers are assigned to the case. He responded only that it was a police investigation. According to crime statistics on Towson's Web site, the TUPD has not reported a robbery in a residential facility since 2001. (Data for 2005 was unavailable.) But if state officials support a proposal by President Robert Caret, the institution could model a trimester schedule in the years to come. Towson has asked the University System of Maryland to """"consider a pilot trimester project"""" to encourage enrollment """"during a third semester, probably running from the end of April to the end of July,"""" a report stated to the system in November. Caret has been mentioning a trimester for a couple years, and recently the concept has gained momentum. If supported by the state, he said, the trimester could begin with the 2006-07 school year at the earliest. This fall, the University has 18,000 students, or the equivalent of 14,000 full-time students, enrolled in courses. But in the summer sessions, only about 1,500 full-time equivalents are enrolled, or about 10 percent of the fall enrollment. """"If we could double or triple that, it would allow us to handle a lot more students with the same buildings and the same parking lots in a whole different way,"""" Caret told the University Senate in November. Towson has pitched the pilot concept to the university system. """"Before we start going down the road and start getting everyone's knickers in a tizzy, we want to See CLASSES, page 10 .
