Less than 24 hours later Towson's presidential search committee was meeting in the Administration Building to discuss how it would handle Caret's candidacy withdrawal. Caret, president of San Jose State University, was in his office Wednesday, but refused to com-ment on the situation. ""I have removed my name from consideration from the presidency of Towson University,"" Caret said in a statement issued Tuesday. ""Because of my 21-year history with Towson, I did give serious thought to returning."" Administrators say Caret, a former chemistry professor, was the only name given by the com-mittee to the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. At their Friday meeting in Baltimore, regents were expected to appoint Caret to assume the post July 1, 2003. ""[Caret] was apparently considered head and shoulders above all other candidates,"" said a source involved with the search. ""[The commit-tee] felt comfortable going with solely him."" James Clements, head of the committee, has claimed throughout the entire process that three to five finalists would be submitted to regents. He would not comment on whether or not Caret was the only finalist given to the board, only saying, ""Clearly he was a strong candidate."" However, not everyone on campus feels that way. James Clements, search committee chair, said new candidates may be interviewed through January. Faculty members from various departments were circulating petitions across campus Tuesday, urging the committee to reject Caret as a candi-date. ""He is the worst possible choice,"" associate professor of English Glen Scott Allen said of Caret. ""If the search had been open we would have been able to squash his candidacy in the ear-liest stages. In fact, that was exactly what was done when his name was put forth during the search that resulted in the choice of the last pres-ident. [Caret] was unacceptable then, and he's unacceptable now."" Meredith Heinen The Towerlight Christmas is here but once a year, and with it comes special events that define the season. ""The Nutcracker' is one of these special events for the Towson community, and as part of the holiday season the Tu Dance Company will per-form the ballet this month. This year marks the 31st season the dance company has presented the ballet at Towson. Dance depart-ment chairperson and company director Dennis Price choreo-graphed the entire show. ""I really love the choreography in this show,"" Price said. ""There is a lot of humor that can be enjoyed if the audience is careful to notice Price said he took great care in making the movements on stage seem realistic. ""Sometimes the party scenes tend to look like staged parties, but ours truly look more real,"" he said. Last year was the first time the company used a full, live orchestra to accompany the dancing. This year, however, it is returning to recorded music. ""We only get the full orchestra every four years. but there will be pieces in the spring with live accom-paniment,"" Price said. While for years the tradition was to perform only the second act of the play, the company performed the entire show last year as part of the 30th anniversary celebration. It went so well that this year they will perform the entire show again.
