After months of preparation and speculation, Towson will submit a housing proposal to the University System of Maryland by the end of the year. At the same time, officials are preparing a Request for Proposals for the first phase of the building's development. """"We are defi- nitely putting an RFP together to do it,"""" President Robert Caret said in an interview Wednesday afternoon. """"I expect we'll be able to build on our site near Enrollment Services and Millennium Hall. We're moving ahead on that."""" Caret said the building may include apartments as well as dormitory-style rooms. The proposal aligns with the University's master plan, which envisions """"West Village housing"""" along Towsontown Boulevard in addition to several residential buildings where parking lots currently sit. Towson wants 500 to 600 new beds to be available for students in the fall of 2008. Administrators are facing a housing shortage as enrollment increases to around 19,000 students next fall, and likely top 20,000 by 2008. Interim Vice President for Administration I expect wm be able to build on our site near. ..Millennium Hall. We're moving ahead on that. Robert Caret President and Finance Alan Leberknight said the RFP isn't ready yet. """"What we have is a detailed plan that we're going to discuss with the System... by the end of the year,"""" he said. Leberknight said a committee of staff members, including representatives from facilities management and Housing and Residence Life, are preparing the plan. If or when the system approves the plan, the University will issue an RFP for an architect to begin designing the building. TU cements program reputation on MANS Board Sharon Leff Associate News Editor Nursing is one of Towson University's most prominent majors. But for almost 20 years, Towson wasn't represented on the Maryland Association of Nursing Students Board. Now, suddenly, TU is the dominant member. MANS helps nursing majors with the transition between being a student and entering the professional world. Their aim is to help students make connections and be updated on the constantly changing world of nursing, according to the group's official Web site. """"Towson went from a 17-year time frame of never having any representation to having the most students on the MANS board,"""" Michelle MMmmNmmmmmmmNmm Lane, faculty advisor to the nursing student association, said. Lane, a clinical assistant professor in the nursing department, said Towson receives recognition for having three students on the board. """"Towson, with more students in this past year on the Board than any other nursing school in Maryland, will now identify Towson University's department of nursing as being the school of excellence,"""" Lane said. The University finished second to Johns Hopkins University last year for the National Council Licensure Examination, which is the state board examination test for a registered nursing license. """"Over the past several years, Johns Hopkins School of Nursing has taken the lead on having their students be the primary participants on the MANS board, and as a result they got connected into, early on, the nursing association,"""" Lane said. """"So they automatically began to build their network younger.""""
