Senators face
competition
for first time
Candidates print shirts,
reach out for support in
contested race for SGA

Facebook groups and sidewalk drawings have
sprouted for students to see, as many senators
running in the Student Government Association
election are feeling the need to campaign for a
position.
This is the first year SGA senator candidates
have run contested since the Spring 2006 election.
Previous to 2006, senators ran as a ticket with
executive board candidates. For the last few years,
there haven’t been enough candidates to fill the
seats required.
Senators will be listed on a ballot and an online
form when voting takes place on Tuesday and
Wednesday.
One concern is that since there are only 20 avail¬
able positions in the senate, many voting students
will go straight down the line, checking the first 20
senators on the list.
“This theory has a lot of credibility because it is a
very easy thing to do," current SGA senator Lauren
McDade said, who is running for re-election.
McDade said that she thinks the increase in the
number of candidates is indicative of greater inter¬
est in the SGA and more accessible knowledge of
how to run for office.
Last year, students weren’t very cognizant of
where and how to start, she said.
She says she plans on hanging up flyers and
chalking areas of the campus to promote herself.
Many potential senators are taking this election
more seriously, knowing that seven candidates will
not be able to continue as a senator.
"Knowing that there are 27 candidates and only
20 senate seats adds an additional level of pres¬
sure to the campaign, " current senator Stephen
Crudele said in an e-mail. "With such a large group
running for the senatorial office, I have been more
motivated to get out there and ensure students are
informed of who I am and what I stand for."
Crudele has made a small number of campaign
T-shirts featuring his name in bold letters.
"I decided to run for a senator position because
it is important for the voice of the students to be

Barely after 3 p.m., a line had
already formed in front of the grill.
By the time the doors were sched¬
uled to open, four hours later, it had
slithered all the way around the first
floor of the University Union, past the
mailroom, up the stairs to the second
floor.
Men and women of varying ages
- though most of them were college
students - made up the crowd at the
David Cook concert at Paws Friday
night. Many attendees were from out¬
side of the Towson area, including
Krista Eby from Greencastle, Pa.
A fan of Cook’s from his days on
“American Idol," she was shocked he
was playing such an intimate loca¬
tion.
“When the American Idols do the
tours at Verizon Center and such, I
usually go to those, so I was kind of
surprised he’d come to such a small
venue,” Eby said.
The event, hosted by the Campus
Activities Board, is one of the bigger
shows the student group has put on
this semester and the biggest Paws
has seen.
The venue is allowed to hold 558
people, per the fire code, and every
single spot was used for tickets,
according to CAB programming chair
Ryan Grasso. Tickets went on sale for
students at the end of February. The
show was sold out within a week.
Before entering the show, Cook was
by his tour bus with fans that weren't
able to get tickets. After the show, he
spent hours signing autographs and
posing for photos before getting back
on the bus.
The concert began with Ryan Star,
who performed a semi-acoustic act he
said he’d never done before.
