Although the group gained most of its national exposure by releasing its 1999 collaboration with Erykah Badu and Eve, ""You Got Me,"" the band emerged in Philadelphia in the 1980s. Special events chair Amy Ayers said CAB was considering more mainstream bands, but the commit-tee had more luck booking a smalltr act. ""We were looking into commer-cial acts,"" Ayers said, ""but this was what was available."" Ayers said it's difficult to book big name bands during spring because so many colleges are look-ing for high profile acts. ""I think it will appeal to a lot of people. They're not rap or hardcore death metal."" Jennifer Tegges sophomore, art major ""The last week in April and the first week in May are big for college concerts,"" Ayers said. ""We were pretty much shooting for anything."" But Concert Chair Ben Ricchardi said he's pleased with this year's headliner and thinks that students will benefit from the concert because The Roots present a unique style. ""We all wanted diversity and what we got was the most eclectic hip-hop act that would cater to the most students,"" Ricchardi said. The Roots' drummer ?uestlove played percussion on this year's remake of Marvin Gaye's ""What's Going On,"" and the band performed alongside Jay-Z on MTV's ""Unplugged."" The band was also the first hip-hop group to perform at Avery See ROOTS, page 10 Towson hosts High Times editor to talk pot, take on DEA with 'Heads vs. Feds' Jennifer Hykes. The Towerlight What do a former Drug Enforcement Agent and the editor of High Times magazine have in common? A passion for marijuana that has led them to tour campuses nationwide, for one thing. Steven Hager, editor in chief of High Times, a counterculture publi-cation that focuses on all things marijuana, and Robert Stutman, who has spent 25 years working in drug enforcement, will present ""The Great Debate - Heads vs. Feds"" as part of the CAB Lecture Series tonight in the University Union Chesapeake Rooms. ""['The Great Debate' tour began] last year,"" Hager said. ""[It was a] concept put together by Scott Wolfman, although I had a similar debate going before that against Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, that was also called 'Heads vs. Feds."" The debate travels to college campuses across the country, facili-tating dialogue between members of both sides of the issue of legaliz-ing marijuana. CAB Lecture Chair Jen Lindrud-Bush said as soon as she learned about the debate, she began working to bring it to Towson. ""It looked really interesting, and I talked to them, and at all the other schools it's been a controver-sial subject, and I thought it would be fun to bring [to Towson],"" Lindrud-Bush said. The Office of Student Activities, Substance Educational Concerns Committee and CAB began plan-ning for the debate last fall, Lindrud-Bush said. Each of the debaters could be called an expert in his field. Hager, an Illinois native, formed several underground publications before graduating high school. He holds a Masters in journalism from the University of Illinois, is the author of two books and a screenplay, and See DEBATE, page 8 Today High 49 Low 30 Friday High 52 Low 29 Saturday High 50 Low 28 Sunday High 52 Low 33 Monday High 57 Lou' 42 "
