Caret named next president Former provost to visit TU community today; faculty and staff surprised by announcement Mike Morris The Towerlight Exactly four months ago, former TU provost Bob Caret withdrew his candidacy for Towson University's presidency. Today, amid shocked faculty members, Caret will be announced as the University's 12th president. ""Once he withdrew, the campus figured the search committee would come up with either no one or someone else, and then Dr. Caret re-emerged as the only candidate,"" said Jack Fruchtman, a political sci-ence professor and former chair of the University Senate. Petitions in both the political sci-ence and English departments were circulated last semester rejecting Caret as a candidate for the post. ""I'm shocked to my very core,"" said Glen Scott Allen, an associate professor of English. ""This could lead to some resigna-tions ... it seems like the search committee is show-ing complete con-tempt for the facul-ty "" , Mark Crusante, one of two stu-dents on Towson's presidential search committee, said he knows ""the whole campus won't have Caret; however, he Caret's governing style. ""We as a team have finally found that shooting star,"" the junior polit-ical science major said of Caret, who will be introduced to campus today at 11:15 a.m. in the University Union's Chesapeake Rooms. A Towson administrator said Caret spent Wednesday doing lobby- Capitol Hill in Washington for San Jose State University, where he currently serves as president Caret is expected to meet today with representative campus groups ranging from the SGA to staff mem-bers in the Office of the President ""It's basically a PR stint,"" Crusante said of Caret's visit. ""He's been here before, so why would he want to go around campus ing work on ""All I can say is that I'm tremendously caught off guard and surprised. Caret said in a statement issued Wednesday: ""My 21-year history with Towson was a big factor in this decision. My family and I played a role in helping it grow and evolve for many years. We know that Towson has a great deal of untapped poten-tial. I also feel that I can play an important role in helping TU to maximize that potential and contin-ue to develop as one of the premiere institutions in this country.""
