Brian Stelter Editor in Chief Towson University President Robert L. Caret is one of two final-ists for the presidency at Temple University in Philadelphia, todays Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Caret, who returned to TU three years ago after an eight-year stint at San Jose State University, did not return phone calls from The Towerlight on Wednesday evening. If selected, Caret will succeed David Adamany, who has served as Temples president since 2000. Adamany is stepping down June 30. On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that the other candi-date is Ann Weaver Hart, president at the University of New Hampshire. A spokesperson for the school said Hart did not apply for the job, but was nominated. The search for Temples next president has advanced in recent days. On Tuesday, The Temple News, the universitys student newspaper, said the committee had narrowed its search to three finalists. The news-paper quoted committee member Jane Evans, who said the candi-dates are experienced fund-rais-ers who have spent many years in higher education. The Inquirer said the third candidate, John Fry, the current president of Franklin & Marshall College, withdrew himself from consideration. According to the newspaper report, Temples presidential search committee will meet today. The committee could either vote to nom-inate Hart or Caret or decide to keep looking, the Inquirer reported. Caret spent 21 years at Towson as a professor, dean and provost before moving to California to take over San Jose State in 1995. He returned to Maryland to become president of Towson on July 1, 2003. In some ways, Temple has more in common with San Jose than it does with Towson. Temple enrolls 34,000 students, compared to 27,000 at San Jose and 18,000 at Towson. Temple has 3,200 faculty members, compared to 1,600 at San Jose and 1,250 at Towson. Temple also has a medical school, something that neither Towson nor San Jose has. Some at Temple doubt that either candidate is up to the job of running an enterprise as big and complex as Temple, Thursdays Inquirer reported. That has led at least some trustees to suggest that the search should be reopened to include one or more new finalists, according to three sources close to the search process. In 2003, Caret said his long his-tory with Towson was a big factor in his decision to return. I also feel that I can play an important role in helping TU to maximize that potential and contin-ue to develop as one of the premiere institutions in this country, he said at the time. Caret has spent the last year hiring a new athletic director, vice president for administration and finance, and assistant to the president for commu-nications. In an interview on Tuesday, Caret remarked that his entire execu-tive staff was finally in place. File photo TU President Robert Caret. Despite sound problems during the first hour of the event, performers used improv to entertain the packed Chesapeake Rooms. Once sound was restored, students and professional per-formers alike paraded about the room, lip singing to songs like Redneck woman and RuPauls Supermodel. See story, page 9.
