Dating replaced
with 'hooking up'

USA Today recently published a study showing that
there are now fewer committed relationships and more
mutual "hookups" in the modem college culture. But
how college students define those hookups as a factor
in the relationship game. Does "hooking up" mean
kissing someone? Is it sex? Does it depend on who
you ask?
Yes, all of the above.
Sophomore Elizabeth Mackey said it depends on
who tells her they’ve been hooking up.
"If someone says they’ve hooked up with someone,
I normally ask for clarification because everyone’s
interpretation is different. If my friend says T hooked
up with that guy,’ I give them the look like, 'How far
did you go?”’ she said. "Personally, I think hooking up
is just making out at that point.”
Other students, like sophomore John Love, don’t
define hooking up as anything but a pastime.
"Hooking up simply means fun," he said. "It’s a

Freshman Rose Singer was told she was going to the
Inner Harbor for a girl’s night out: dinner at the Hard
Rock Cafe followed by a walk around the waterfront. But
without warm close for a night on the town, Singer was
freezing in the February air.
"I didn’t have a jacket, so I’m like, ‘Can we go home?
Can we go home?,” Singer said. "And [my friend] was
like, ‘No, no. Let’s stay here.’”
Little did Singer know, her boyfriend of two years,
19-year-old Randy Simons, had arranged for Rose to be
guided to the Harbor so he could propose.
"Ah of a sudden he pops up from around a corner,"
Singer said.
There was also an element of surprise in Travis Gibb’s
proposal to freshman Joanna Rizzo. But Rizzo, who met
Gibb in a church youth group and began dating him in
the eighth grade, said she didn't need a grand romantic
gesture.

The Campus Activities Board has made
further progress in securing artists for
Tigerfest, announcing that ska-punk
band Reel Big Fish has been added to the
May 6 lineup.
CAB assistant director Sam Silverman
said that she expects a positive campus
reaction to the announcement.
“I don’t think they’re as mainstream as
other artists, but the people who do like
them will be stoked that they’re coming,"
she said.
For some students who have spent
the past few months in anticipation of
CAB’s Tigerfest announcements, the art¬
ist choice was a letdown.
“It seems like they can’t get a big
name, so they are trying to reel in a bunch
of

bands,” senior exercise science
major Patrick Clark said. “I just feel like
Tigerfest is supposed to showcase a head¬
liner that a large majority of people will
enjoy. It seems that Reel Big Fish has a
specific type of fan. I’ve never heard of
them, but after looking them up, it seems
like they haven’t been relevant since the
‘90s. To me, that doesn’t sound like a
band that should be headlining a show
such as Tigerfest."
Students who have heard Reel Big Fish
play, such as junior history secondary
education major Jim Grandfield, said the
band will put on a high-energy show.
"I’ll admit that I was getting pretty fed
up until now, just like a lot of students
were, since it seemed like CAB wasn’t
doing their job in securing a headliner,"
Grandfield said. "I was on the fence
about going before, but now I definitely
am getting my ticket ASAP. This is the
first Tigerfest that I can honestly say I'm
excited about."
