Charlie says Kevin came home that week-end for the local high schools homecom-ing. They exchanged the typical give me a hug, dont do it in public goodbye parents often share with their children. About a week later, Charlie received a phone call at 3 a.m., informing him that his son was the victim of a hit and run accident. Now, six months after the death of Towson freshman Kevin Ryan, his parents have set up a scholarship in his name at Towson University. A golf tournament fund-raiser next month will support the scholarship. Kevins father and his uncle Jamie Ryan said the preparation for the tournament has brought the family closer during this difficult time. We were already tight-knit, but we have become much closer, if thats possible, Jamie said. With this golf outing, we talk to each other more. We didnt talk every single day. Now we do, practically five times a dayThats a positive thing that has hap-pened to our family. Charlie and Jamie are the second and sev-enth children respectively of eight siblings, each of whom has a different task in putting together the tournament. We all help each other out. We all lean on each other at different times. The strength of the family really helps the whole process of healing, Jamie said. In October, just days before Towsons Homecoming festivities, Kevin was walk-ing home at night from a friends house Now on TheTowerlight.com: View video of Battle of the Bands and Word on the Street Headliner remains unsigned TIGERFEST Less than three weeks left before annual spring concert Tragedy brings family closer Scholarship, golf tournament planned to honor Kevin Ryan Photos by Patrick Smith/The Towerlight Clasping their hands, Kevin Ryans father, Charlie, right, and Ryans uncle, Jamie, left, speak about some of their favorite memories of Kevin in Clarksville, Md. on Wednesday. But less than three weeks before the scheduled concert, the Campus Activities Board and the office of student activities have yet to confirm the bands appear-ance at the annual spring festival on Burdick field. According to student activities coordinator for pro-gramming Bridget Chase, the Universitys legal counsel is still working with The Roots legal counsel on a final contract. Were still in negotiation, she said. We have accepted many changes of theirs and they have accepted many changes of ours. Chase would not elaborate as to what in the con-tracts is specifi-cally causing the impediment, citing the confidentiality of the proceedings. We just received their latest set of changes today [April 9] so our legal counsel is looking through that, Chase said. I antici-pate that well hear if we can accept everything either this evening or tomorrow morning. Other representatives from the office of student activities and campus life declined to comment. Last week, Chase confirmed that three bands had signed contracts: Fire in the Hole, The Calling and Immortal Technique. Chase remains optimistic that a signed contract for The Roots is forthcoming. I am extremely hopeful that it will all work out, she said. I truly believe that it will be fine. I have never had a concert fall through. I am extremely that it will out. I truly believe that it will be fine. I have never had a concert fall through.
