Student Government Association Resolution

A Resolution whereas ~ we, the Student Senate of towson State College, are unalterably opposed to all attempts to use the Selective Service system as an instnu.ment or punishment; and whereas, the memorandum of October 26, 1967 » issued by National Selective Service Director Lewis Bo Hershey~ grossly violates the constitutionally secured riehts of all draft registrants to th0 free exercise of the First Amendment rights; and whereas local Selective service Board, have already abused their power by punishing approximately thirty registrants for allegedly illegal activities that those Boards have construed as being contrary to +he "national interest;" and "VJ'- reas~ we believe th:t it is imperative for student governments of every political persuasion and of every geoeraphical area to speak out agairst these unjust and illegal acts in terms that may not be rr. ·.stakem; therefore be it Resolved 9 That this Senate reaffirms its prior position opposing arbitrary use of the Selective Service System as a tool for silencing public dissent on public issues; and be it further Resolved, That ·this senate appropriate five hundred dollars (:~500) as a contribution to the American Civil Liberties Union. These monies are to oe used solely for the purpose of providing legal defense for students reclassified as a result of General Hershey's October 26 memorandum. If money talks louder than words then we are determined that our voice will be heard.
