RESOLUTION 2022-2023 #8 IN THE STUDENT SENATE OF TOWSON UNIVERSITY, SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2022, A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE ADDITION OF CREDIT GRADE FOR PASS FAIL OPTION. INTRODUCED ON: September 20th, 2022 INTRODUCED BY: Senator McGuire COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: SENATE ACTION: Break Senate Rules ENACT UPON APPROVAL. Jordan A. Colquitt, President - Student Government Association RESOLUTION: A policy concerning the addition of CRD (CREDIT) Grade option into the Pass Grading Option. WHEREAS, At Towson University a pass-fail is defined as an “option is intended to provide students with the opportunity to explore a broad range of coursework, with no effect on the cumulative grade point average (GPA) provided that they earn a minimum grade of C (2.00) in the courses for which they have requested this option. WHEREAS, Pass/Fail is not available for Core 1,2,9 and any major classes. Making it useless in helping the student get their degree. However, for the other classes/cores where Pass/Fail is allowed, a D grade is also allowed. If students slip up and are unable to maintain a C for a course marked as Pass/Fail they risk losing their GPA. WHEREAS, During Spring 2020 COVID, Regarding the grading announcements, a letter written to students on March 26 said, "In consideration of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the spring 2020 semester and the rapid shift to a distance education format, the provost, in consultation with the executive committee of the academic Senate, SGA leadership, the academic standards committee, and the provost’s council has determined that the undergraduate Pass Grading Option will be modified for the spring 2020 term only." WHEREAS, Pass/Fail during Spring 2020, Earn a grade of D+ or D will receive the CRD (Credit) grade, which will earn credit but will not be calculated into the GPA. The CRD grade may not be used for major or minor courses or to satisfy prerequisites. It may be used for university- electives and most Core courses (excluding Core 1, 2 and 9). WHEREAS, In Fall 2020 at The University of Maryland, the committee found the majority of Big Ten institutions have a pass minimum grade equivalent of a С, C- or better during its review. It said this data shows that the change will help this university fall in line with its peer institutions.
