RESOLUTION 2022-2023 #16 IN THE STUDENT SENATE OF TOWSON UNIVERSITY, (December 5th, 2022), A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE CHANGING OF THE JUIffiTEENTII October 17^ .QBSERVANe&eflrTO TUESDAY AFTER THE FIRST MONDAY IN THE MONTH ^ OF NOVEMBER TO PROMOTE STUDENT CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. INTRODUCED ON: November 29th, 2022 INTRODUCED BY: Senator Bell (On behalf of Directorjohnstone) COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: SENATE ACTION: ENACT UPON APPROVAL. Jordan A. Colquitt, President — Student Government Association WHEREAS, With the Passage of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, the university has had an additional day off that they can implement into the calendar in the future. Currently, that date is set as October 17th, which is a date that could be replaced with the Tuesday after the first Monday in the month of November. WHEREAS, American University declared Election Day a national holiday and gave a day off to students which played a major role in promoting civic engagement and allowing students to fulfill their civic duties. WHEREAS, Towson University is responsible for upholding civic engagement and freeing classes during election day, this would substantially boost voter turnout on campus. WHEREAS, this fall, TU again earned national recognition as one of America’s best colleges for student voting, one of only a handful with a student voter registration rate above 85%. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Student Senate of the 102nd Student Government Administration recommends that Towson University change the off day dedicated for Juneteenth to the Tuesday after the first Monday in the month of November.
