RESOLUTION 2020-2021 #20 IN THE STUDENT SENATE OF TOWSON UNIVERSITY, NOVEMBER 2nd, 2021, A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE DECLARATION OF COMMITTING TOWSON UNIVERSITY’S MAIN CAMPUS & TOWSON UNIVERSITY NORTH EASTERN (TUNE) TO BE 100% CARBON NEUTRAL BY 2030 IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MARYPIRG STUDENT CLIMATE ACTION COALITION (MSCAC) GUIDELINES AND THE GUIDELINES SET BY THE FUTURE ACT (H.R. 803). DeVeaux, President - Student Government Association WHEREAS, There is currently a commitment on behalf of the Office of Towson University President Kim Schatzel to make the campus carbon neutral by 2050. WHEREAS, The MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Coalition, which Towson University's Student Government Association's Director of Sustainability and Civic Engagement is affiliated with, was essential in the creation of The Facilitating University Transformations by Unifying Reductions in Emissions (FUTURE) Act (H.R. 803). WHEREAS, The Facilitating University Transformations by Unifying Reductions in Emissions (FUTURE) Act (H.R. 803) called on all public institutions of higher education in Maryland to be carbon neutral for by 2035; specified certain requirements that all public institutions of higher education in Maryland must meet in order to achieve the carbon neutral requirements under the Act; authorized all public institutions of higher education in Maryland to use carbon offsets that do not meet the requirements of the Act under certain circumstances; etc. WHEREAS, The Facilitating University Transformations by Unifying Reductions in Emissions (FUTURE) Act (H.R. 803) was brought to the Maryland State Appropriations committee in February, 2021. WHEREAS, the MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Coalition presented the FUTURE Act (Fl.R. 803) in Spring 2021 as an attempt to promote sustainability and civic responsibility across Maryland state Universities. While this legislation was not enacted into law, it is an important step in sustainability efforts in the state of Maryland.
