FYI: STUDENT ABSENCE POLICY
The health center has published brochures
regarding health services for students
and information about policies
concerning medical absences from classes.
The following is a reprint from the brochure
involving absences.
"The Health Center does not routinely
provide written absence excuses to students.
Instructors can verify that a student
has received medical treatment at the
Health Center by calling 321-2466. No confidential
information regarding diagnosis
and treatment will be given without the student's
permission. If a Health Center practitioner
recommends the student miss class,
however, a note will then be given indicating
the dates for which medical absence is
justified.
Under no condition will the Health Center
verify illness or absence for anyone not
treated by the Health Center staff. This matter
must be resolved by the student and the
instructor."
For more info., call the health center,

On Sept. 24, a representative of the
United Buying Service (UBS) will be on
campus to explain the benefits of the UBS
program. UBS offers State employees the
opportunity to purchase vehicles and
home furnishings at considerably reduced

through the Royal Furniture Showroom

less than the lowest price found in retail
stores. Vehicles are available for $100 over
the manufacturer's list price with reduced
prices and desired options. The UBS representative
will speak at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
in room 312 in the union. Call Cynthia
Mellerson, x2161, by Sept. 20 to reserve a

PREVENT FIRES
A fire is a combination of three elements:
fuel (something to burn), air (oxygen),
and heat (something to set it off).
Take away one, and you can't have fire. A
house is plenty of fuel and it sits in plenty
of air, but it will never burn unless it is
torched by a heat source. During Fire Prevention
Week (Oct. 6-12), make an effort
to identify those sources of heat ... forgotten
cigarette, children with matches,
faulty electrical wiring, improper storage
of flammables, etc., and subtract your
chances of fire.
Literature on home fire safety is available
from Eric Seaborg, director of occupational
safety and health, x2161. ■
