- Description
- Wang Yachen was deeply trained in calligraphy from an early age and studied in Japan and Paris before becoming the principal of Hsin Hua College in Shanghai in the 1930s. He resided in the USA from 1948 to 1980, teaching and exhibiting his works extensively. His work merged traditional styles of ink and watercolor paintings based off the work of Sung and Yuan masters with brilliant colors and quick, bold strokes commonly seen in Western art in order to create his own distinct style. He typically depicted subjects from the natural world, such as trees, flowers, mountains, and animals, but he also practiced calligraphy as well using the same media on hanging scrolls. Goldfish, fighting cocks, and eagles are among his favorite subjects.
