EHRLICH, JR. REGARDING NEW COLD ROLLING MILL AT BETH STEEL SPARROWS POINT “Today Bethlehem Steel Corporation announced that it has appropriated $300 million to construct a new cold-rolling mill complex at its Sparrows Point facility. I am elated by Bethlehem’s announcement. "I am glad my efforts, and those of other Maryland elected officials, have borne fruit. When I met with Curtis Barnette, chairman of the board of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, this past May, I expressed my strong belief that Sparrows Point was the only logical choice for this investment. I reiterated my position in subsequent correspondence and in many telephone conversations with Mr. Barnette and other Bethlehem Steel officials. "Bethlehem Steel’s decision was correct from both a business and a human standpoint. Replacing the old cold rolling mill will dramatically expand the capacity and efficiency of this venerable eastern Baltimore County institution. It renews the time-proven partnership between Bethlehem Steel and generations of Sparrows Point workers. “Today’s victory belongs to the working men and women of Sparrows Point. They earned the continued confidence which Bethlehem Steel’s sizeable re-investment in them represents. I am pleased to have been a part of this process.”
