C. -- House Speaker Newt Gingrich has appointed Congressman Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. (R-2nd., MD) to a select panel charged with identifying and correcting dumb, outmoded, and fundamentally flawed federal laws, rules, and regulations. Congressman Ehrlich is one of 12 members named to the Speaker’s Special Advisory Committee on Corrections. The bipartisan committee is largely responsible for determining which legislation can be considered under the new corrections legislative process adopted by the House on June 20. Under this process, members may introduce legislation to correct obvious errors or mistakes in existing law. Working closely with the Speaker, the committee will determine which bills qualify as corrections legislation. Corrections bill may be considered on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, and require a three-fourths majority for passage. “I am pleased the Speaker has given me this important responsibility,” the Congressman explained. “Foolish laws and ridiculous regulations impose a hidden tax on the backs of business. They complicate the lives of the people they are supposed to help. Repealing them is not a political issue— it is a matter of common sense.”
