S. House of Representatives has passed legislation cutting reporting requirements for executive branch departments and agencies. S.790, the Federal Reports Elimination and Sunset Act of 1995, was passed by voice vote as part of the new “Corrections Day” procedure for repealing outmoded laws and regulations. The bill identifies 200 Congressionally mandated reports to be either eliminated or modified; eliminates some annual reports that have not been requested for nearly 15 years; and places a sunset requirement which, four years after the bill is enacted, eliminates reports with an annual, semi-annual, or other regular reporting requirements. According to Congressional Budget Office estimates, this bill will save the American taxpayer an estimated $8 million per year. “This bipartisan bill is a perfect example of why Corrections Day is a good idea,” stated Congressman Ehrlich, the principal House sponsor of S.790. “Once established under law, production of these government reports continues, sometimes for decades, regardless of whether anyone still reads them or still needs the information they contain. This overdue housecleaning will help to reduce the blizzard of paperwork that strangles our government.” The U. S. Senate passed S. 790 on July 17, 1995.
