Ehrlich, Jr. (R-2nd., Maryland) has called upon his House colleagues to support continued funding for environmental cleanup programs at Aberdeen Proving Ground and other Department of Defense installations. Ehrlich invited his colleagues to sign a letter to Congressman C. W. Young, chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on National Security, in support of the FY 96 budget request of $1.6 billion for the Defense Environmental Restoration Account (DERA) and $457 million for cleanup of military facilities slated for closure. Ehrlich expects bipartisan support for this effort. “These funds are of critical importance to the continued success of APG’s Installation Restoration Program (IRP),” the Congressman explained. “During FY 95 APG received $41.5 million to remediate environmental problems resulting from historic operational and disposal practices at APG. Due to the size and scope of the environmental cleanup job at APG, the Army allocated the maximum amount of DERA funds allowable under law.” “The DOD rescissions bill cuts $300 million from DERA,” the Congressman stated. “This tremendous reduction in funding will delay if not halt the steady progress the Army has made towards cleaning up the 13 specific areas of concern at APG.”
