Bush today for his decision to impose 30% tariffs on steel imports. The decision comes after an International Trade Commission (ITC) investigation, which was also initiated by President Bush, found significant evidence of illegal steel dumping on American shores by foreign nations. Congressman Ehrlich stated, “President Bush’s leadership and courageous decision are critical to saving our domestic steel industry. American Steelworkers have no better friend and ally than President Bush. In addition to fighting the War on Terrorism and pulling the nation out of economic recession, President Bush made resolving the steel import crisis one of his highest priorities by initiating the much-needed Section 201 trade investigation.” The ITC recommended tariffs ranging between 20%-40% on certain steel products. After careful and thoughtful deliberation, President Bush is implementing 30% tariffs on certain steel products from the offending nations. These are important steps the Clinton Administration refused to undertake. Congressman Ehrlich continued, “As the representative of Bethlehem Steel’s Sparrows Point Plant, I am pleased that our President listened to his friends in Congress and did what is right for our steelworkers. Once again, President Bush and the Republican Party have stepped up to the plate for the working men and women of this country.” As a member of the Congressional Steel Caucus, Congressman Ehrlich has worked hard to help resolve the steel crisis by testifying before the ITC, personally lobbying colleagues and the White House, and speaking at steel rallies in both Baltimore and Washington, D.C. “This decision will not be forgotten by the steel industry and its grateful workers,” Ehrlich added. ###
