MD 21221 EHRLICH, KENNELLY URGE LEADERSHIP TO PROTECT BLIND IN WAYS AND MEANS BILL Joined by 99 Other Members in Letter to Gingrich Congressman Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. (R-2nd., MD) and Congresswoman Barbara Kennelly (D-lst., CT) today sent a letter to House Speaker Newt Gingrich urging him to amend a key measure in the Senior Citizens’ Equity Act in a manner which would benefit blind individuals. Ninety-nine other Members of Congress signed onto the bipartisan letter. A copy of the text of the letter is attached. “This issue has nothing to do with politics or party affiliation,” Rep. Ehrlich explained. “Rather it is based on common-sense and compassion. Raising the amount which the blind as well as the elderly may earn before losing Social Security benefits is consistent with what government’s role should be in the 1990s— empowering individuals.” “Both the blind and the elderly struggle to maintain independence; both seek the opportunity to contribute to society.
