The Congressman also expressed concern with the future of the UAW-represented employees currently working at the company’s Broening Highway Truck Assembly plant. “GM has been a good corporate citizen, and I would welcome their opening a new plant in the region,” Ehrlich said. “I am concerned, however, by comments from company officials which suggest that the new location, if built here, will be staffed with workers currently employed at the Broening Highway plant. Those are thousands of jobs in play, thousands of jobs that we cannot afford to lose.” Ehrlich added the State may need to take a stepped-up role in working to keep the Broening Highway plant open “regardless of whether a new plant is constructed.” “The State invests in many job-producing ventures,” Ehrlich stated. “I see no reason the State should not save the jobs of three thousand dedicated, skilled auto workers.” m О
