EHRLICH, JR. REGARDING ALLEGATIONS OF MISSPENT FUNDS BY THE BALTIMORE HODSING ADTHORITY Congressman Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. (R-2nd. , MD) , a member of the Congressional Housing Subcommittee which oversees funds disbursed by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, stated, "I am deeply disturbed by the Baltimore Housing Authority's alleged abuse and mismanagement of federal funds. If these allegations are true, then Housing Authority chief Daniel Henson's conduct in this matter is reprehensible. Baltimore City must reimburse the federal government for all misspent funds." "Perhaps the most unfortunate aspect of this whole mess is Mayor Schmoke's remark that '(o)nly Federal funds were used, not local tax dollars' — as if public funds may be freely squandered as long as they derive from the national trough. I understand that Mayor Schmoke has since expressed regret for this statement, and I am not going to dwell on an acknowledged mistake. Still it is especially disappointing that the Clinton Administration continues to pour millions in HUD dollars into a negligent if not criminally- run city agency." MORE
