Most people view Joe Steme as a journalist’s journalist — a reputation he clearly deserves. Equally impressive is Joe’s profound understanding of and respect for American political institutions. Since coming to Congress, I have spoken with Joe Steme informally on many occasions about events in Washington. I am struck by his ability to look beyond the politics of the moment, and to place today’s political disputes into their proper historical context. He is part newspaperman and part scholar, two essential qualities an editorial page editor should have. Joe Steme is a man of high integrity, keen intellect, and personal fair mindedness.
