I agree that we need to begin paying down the massive federal debt before embarking on another spending spree. Accordingly, I am a co-sponsor of H.R. 2191, the National Debt Repayment Act of 1997. This bill will cap federal spending at a rate which will ensure the government spends less than it collects. It will allocate the resulting surplus towards eliminating the federal debt, expanding tax relief to include more hard-working Americans, and guaranteeing that Social Security is around for those that have already contributed to the system. You are 1 are both the same age, so I understand your concerns about the viability of the Social 1 Security and Medicare systems. However, I believe that, by acting in a swift, responsible manner, Congress can guarantee the long-term solvency of these programs so they are still around when you and I retire.
