It is always good to hear from the young people of the Second Congressional District. When the GOP took control of Congress in 1994, my colleagues and I outlined our agenda in the Contract with America. All ten proposals outlined in the Contract received a full debate and vote on the House floor. Moreover, forty-six of the eighty-one pieces of legislation resulting from the Contract were signed into law by a Democratic president. The 104th Congress has saved the American taxpayer a total of $53 billion. We kept our promise of reducing government and cutting federal spending. During the 105th Congress, I hope that we are able to make progress on some of the remaining issues, such as Medicare reform; enactment of a balanced budget plan; and granting tax relief to working families and businesses. In your letter, you indicated a desire to see a greater sense of bipartisanship emerge during the 1 05th Congress. I agree with you. For that to occur, both Congress and the President must be willing to deal with each other in good faith. I hope President Clinton is serious about enacting a balanced budget plan. By far, balancing the budget is the most important issue facing young people like you today. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.
