I am confident that the federal government will continue to play a role in funding such projects. Yet it is difficult to assess the extent to which this role may be altered in the future. We have reached a situation in which balancing the federal budget has become our top national priority. Speaker Gingrich has indicated that, except for Social Security, all federal spending programs are on the table. Yet the Speaker has also indicated his strong personal support for technological research, as well as his desire to see innovative technologies made more widely available to the American people. Thus it is hard to envision a situation in which research funds would be disproportionately impacted by budget cuts. Thanks again for contacting me regarding this matter.
