Towson State Vnivetsitv Tiget Tmm§ Published exclusively for Tiger Club members by the News and Publications Services Thursday, August 25, 1977 PREVIEWING THE '77 TIGERS Heading back to the Stagg Bowl and the National championship was the topic of con¬ versation last Saturday when our Tiger football team opened up its summer camp in prep¬ aration for the 1977 season. There were a lot of Tiger hopefuls present for the first workout, 90 candidates to be exact. Out of the 90, head coach Phil Albert had 65 new faces. He'll have to look at all of them since he has to find new men to fill 14 positions left vacant. Although we did lose a lot to graduation there are a few spots that Phil won't have to worry about filling. On offense, Ken Snoots will be back at wide receiver. Pat Moore, a Tiger Club Academic Achievement Award winner, returns at guard. Kevin Fidati is back at center. In the backfield, tailback Tom Jones and fullback Rick Bielski lend that need¬ ed experience. Defensively we're set in the secondary. Back from last year is Rick Simmons, Stu Himes and John Rosson. The linebacking crew had an early setback when Paul Nelson damaged his knee. Paul is feared lost for the rest of the season. The other linebackers are ready to fill in that hole with veterans Rich Wheeler, Jack Ervin and Don Magruder return¬ ing for another season. The special teams were very important for the Tigers last season and figure to con¬ tribute handsomely again this year. The kicking game is in the capable hands of Randy Bielski. Inside the 40 yard line you can look for Randy to split the uprights. Last season he hit 12 of 20 attempts and converted 21 of 25 extra points. That accounted for 57 points which was tops on the Tiger squad last year. We've got a problem in the punting department caused by the departure of Jeff Herrick. Herrick was nationally ranked last year and coming into camp Phil doesn't have a bona fide, punter to replace him. For kick returns we're going to have Wardell MacKall back again. The little "spark plug" is 5' 7" and weighs in at 157 lbs. Even though he isn't the biggest man on the squad he sure gave us some thrills last season and hopes to do the same again. The Tigers will leap into their season starting on September 10 when we take on Uni¬ versity of Maryland Eastern Shore under the lights starting at 7:30 p.m. The following week we'll play host to James Madison University. The Dukes beat us last year by two points in Harrisonburg. Later on we'll meet the always tough Yellow Jackets from Randolph-Macon, NAIA na¬ tionally ranked Guilford, Frostburg, three-time New Jersey intercollegiate champ Glassboro State, Bowie, and Salisbury plus Canisius and Ithaca, a pair of upstate New York schools, for the first time ever. BELL'S B00TERS PREPARE FOR OPENER The soccer team began its three-a-day workouts this week with the Mason-Dixon cham¬ pionship in mind. Head coach Paul Bell feels that even though the conference lost to Loyola and Salisbury it is just as tough. "The conference really didn't lose that much. Loyola was at the top and Salisbury was at the bottom. U.M.B.C. and University of Baltimore will be just as tough this year," he said. Filling a roster should be easy for Bell. He has over 50 candidates show up for workouts. Of those 25 are freshmen. Leading the Tigers this year will be Bob Rush, a --over--
