- Description
- Photograph of President Earle T. Hawkins placing time capsule in cornerstone during construction of Ward Hall in 1950. In 2012, Ward and West Halls were shut down and construction was begun to renovate and reopen them as the new home of the Health and Counseling Centers at Ward & West. The time capsule was unearthed and the contents were revealed during a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the new building on January 28, 2014 (link to finding aid of the Ward & West Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Time Capsule Collection: http://library.towson.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/tuafa/id/1046). Earle T. Hawkins served as president of the college from 1947 until 1969. He instituted summer and evening class programs and added more concentrations to the arts and sciences departments to meet the demands of the growth of the college. Named after the school's third leader, George Washington Ward, Ward Hall was one of two dormitories constructed in 1951 to house male students, who, until this time, had no formal housing on campus. At that time, Ward Hall housed about 60 students.
