Presented by the faculty and students of the History Department, the lectures will be held in the Special Dining Room which is housed in the Student Center complex. Refreshments will be served. Wednesday, February Ц, 3:00 p.m. “HISTORY AND HISTORIANS IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY GERMANY" Primarily by way of historical writing on Bismarck in the Weimar and Nazi years, Professor ANDREWS will examine how the competing demands of philosophical tradition, political pressure, and status anxiety affected the values, methods, and focus of interest of German historians. Thursday, February 12, 3:00 p.m. "DUELING Ш AMERICAN HISTORY" Professor MATTHEWS will discuss the origins and practices of notable American duelists. He will suggest the reason for the decline of dueling and will offer justification for its possible revival. Wednesday, February 18, 3:00 p.m. "AN ARMY FOR THE EMPEROR" Professor BLUMBERG will describe the means whereby diplomacy frustrated the efforts of Emperor Maximillian of Mexico to recruit a volunteer army in Europe which would have freed him from dependence on the French. Thursday, February 26, 3 :00 p.m. "RACISM AND NATIONALISM IN VICTORIAN INDIA" The "great days" of British rule in India were the years between 1858 and 1885. The subcontinent was at peace and apparently content under Victoria and her viceroys. Professor KKSCHMANN will show how that apparently content society contained seeds of resentment and rebellion, which would arise to destroy the British Raj within a century. Thursday, March 5, 3:00 p.m. "THE DEATH OF GOD: KANT, FICHTE AND HEGEL" Professor LAREW will discuss the metaphysical and religious ideas of three great German philosophers — thinkers who tried to save God but who, despite themselves, succeeded in digging His grave deeper than ever.
