LECTURE HERE TO DISCUSS BEAUVOIR,
AUTHOR OF THE SECOND SEX
Towson State College is privileged to
have as a guest lecturer, Ms. Margaret
Simons, Doctoral Candidate at Purdue
University, who is completing the first
Ph.D. in Philosophy in this country on
Simone de Beauvoir's masterpiece of
female oppression, The Second Sex. Ms.
Simons is a recent Fulbright Fellowship
recipient who lived in France for a year
to study and to interview Beauvoir. She
has talked with her a number of times,
and will come to Towson direct from her
most recent interview with Beauvoir.
Ms. Simons is being sponsored by the
Women's Studies Committee. Her visit
here is part of the College's Bicentennial
Program. The topic of her talk will be:
The Relations of Simone de Beauvoir to
the American Women's Movement.
The talk will be held on Wednesday, Oct.
22, at 3 p.m., in Linthicum Hall, room
200.
This lecture is free and open to the
public. All students, faculty and
members of the campus community are
encouraged to attend.
Below we provide some quotations from
the works of Simone de Beauvoir:
"In the midst of an abstract discussion
it is vexing to hear a man say: 'You
think thus and so because you are a
woman;' but I know that my only defense
is to reply: 'I think thus and so because
it is true ... ' (The Second Sex,
1949)
"Once there appears a possibility of
liberation it is resignation of freedom
not to exploit the possibility ... " (The
Ethics of Ambiguity, 1947)
Baltimore, Maryland 21204
Vol. 2, #1, October, 1975.
