The first ultimatum was addressed to the Federal Chancellor, more precisely, to the head of the government. Then appeared another German Envoy, in the person of State Secretary Keppler, who demanded to see the Federal President. ''Peppier presented me for the first time with an ultimatum. Seyss-Inquar t was to taho over the Chancellorship within a few hours and a new Austrian Government, in the line of the newly-appointed Chancellor, was to be formed. In case of non-compliance with the terns of the ultimatum, 200,000 men of the Armed Forces of the Reich were assembled at the Austrian border, ready for invasion. It was a military ultimatum of the most serious character, addressed to Austria, for the purpose of achieving a political aim, namely, the removal of the regime." 2. Another ultima tun was presented to Austria. "This ultimatum was presented to me by the German Military Attache, General Muff. It was stated that 200,000 men of the German Armed Forces were ready at the Austrian border to march into Austria by order. 1 have declined this ultimatum, the con¬ tents of which were identical with the ultimatum already transmitted by Peppier, in the same way as I had declined the first one .
