1/2/90 TO: Bob Caret FROM: Sara Coulter SUBJECT: Director, Center for the Study of Women and Education We were in the midst of preparing advertisements for this position when the Job freeze wae announced. Since you were out of town, I called Hoke to discuss advertising the position in the Women's Review of Books, which has a deadline of January 5 for the next month's issue. He agreed that as long as the ad states "contingent on state funding" and contains a deadline of March 15 (March 1 had been the original deadline) it would be best to go ahead with this one advertisement although we would wait on the Chronicle and Black Issues. The position was announced at the NWSA in June and has been widely discussed at meetings and on the phone. As you re-evaluate priorities for funding positions, we would like to review the following arguments for making this position a high priority: 1. The momentum that TSU has establiehed through its FIPSE grants and NWSA con£erence will be sustained and increased by this Center. 2. Other funding from grants and from the state may be contingent on the stability and commitment which this Center represents. That is, FIPSE was impressed that their investment at TSU had led to this level of commitment by the University (TSU has FIPSE grant applications currently submitted, and we anticipate applying for a women's grant next £all). In addition, we are trying to organize an initiative to ask for state fundinq for a curriculum integration effort comparable to that in New Jersey, arguing that Merylond is in an especially favorable position to lead such an effort because of the development at Towson and College Park of curriculum integration expertise and resources. 3. The rapid development of women's programs and curriculum integration efforts at College Park suggests that we should claim our leadership in this area while it is still viable.
