April 12, 1973 Annette Flower and Jane Sheets, Committee on Status of Women Kenneth A. Shaw Promotions and Salaries Enclosed is a list of those persons promoted to each rank at the College. Please keep in mind that I am presently hearing appeals so that there may be some additions to the list. With respect to equity adjustments, I am canvassing the opniion of a variety of groups on campus, including the Affirmative Action Committee, to determine how people feel we should handle the additional salary money if it should be forthcoming. Enclosed is a copy of that letter. Except for cases in which divisions recommend persons for promotion to the upper ranks without the earned doctorate, I honored the priority rankings of the divisions and in the case of promotion to assistant professor, departmental priorities were honored. Of those promoted 24 were men and 12 were women. Of those recommended by the divisions for promotion to full professor but having a lesser priority than those promoted, 12 were men and 0 were women. At the associate professor’s level 13 men and 4 women were recommended for promotion by divisions but not promoted. They also had lower divisional priority rankings than those promoted. At the assistant's level 4 men were recommended by departments but not promoted and 11 women. As you know, departments made their own rank order, and this was passed on to me. Finally, I appreciate your recommmendation with respect to how equity adjustments should be handled and will forward it to the Affirmative Action Committee to study. KAS: pw Enc. (2)
