Memo from Jack W. Taylor to Kenneth A. Shaw, 1974

To: K. A. Shaw, Dean of the College From: Jack W. Taylor Re: Response to the Report on Status of Wo n dated 12/7/73 I find this a very frustrating report. I am not sure why, since I support their major concerns. Possibly it is because the document does very little to advance their cause. Specific items are listed below: 1. They do not seem to be aware that male faculty members at Towson State College control many areas where they have concerns. They do not even share the documents with male faculty members. 2. To my knowledge, they have not fought any specific battles on campus. At least no references are made to any success or failures in this area. One test case may be worth 100 annual reports. 3. As you mentioned, they assume casual relations based upon statistical analysis. 4. At the bottom of page two they do not seem to be aware that we might be implementing the promotion and hiring practice in an equitable fashion and still see the trends develop. 5. Table III-A and III-B have very little meaning without considerinG how long faculty have been at Towson State College. 6. The conclusion near the bottom of page five might be that we should not be hiring any women in the lower rank unless they have a Doctorate. If that is the conclusion then we would hire even less women. 7. On page seven the first paragraph - they write "Positive proof that compensatory promotion for the fully qualified women" exists. This seems like they are finally becoming specific. It would be very helpful if they would supply this proof. 8. I agree that the committees discussed should have women serving on them. It might be helpful if this group would help recruit women for these committees. JWT:js
