Towson State University TOWSON, MARYLAND 21204 University Relations (301)321-2230 November 18, 1980 [handwritten: organiz, studt/SGA] MEMORANDUM TO: President/Executive Director SGA-recognized student organizations cc: Stephen Horn, SGA President Valerie French, SGA Public Relations Director Dorothy Seigel, Dean, Student Affairs FROM: Fran Minakowski, Director, University Relations SUBJECT: TSU publicity intended for off-campus media As you know, university policy holds that TSU's university relations office (a.k.a. public relations) is the sole media liaison to off-campus newspapers, radio and tv stations, magazines, etc. Thus, it's important for the students within your own organization to whom you've delegated responsibility for publicity to be aware of the service our department offers to student organizations. TSU's university relations office (located in the Administration Building, room 313) is eager to help student organizations promote/publicize/advertise their undertakings whenever off-campus promotion is appropriate. We maintain, of course, full listings of media outlets and have almost daily contact with assignment editors, wire service daybooks, and the like. Recently, Circle K used our services to promote its 1980 "Rocker-thon" and we were able to bring a tv crew and a print reporter to the scene for coverage. Certainly, in most instances, your publicity is directed to those on our own campus or to students at other campuses, and you usually reach these constituencies through banners, posters, student newspapers, and campus radio stations and we would not normally be involved in these efforts. However, for those instances where the general public is your "target" and you need to utilize off-campus media, be sure to advise us early about your publicity requirements. Finally, I have directed that all student organizations receive, through their individual mailboxes in the campus post office, a copy of the weekly TSU Report. I'd like to encourage you and your club publicity director to submit material to the Report since its weekly readership of 1365 guarantees you significant exposure for your announcements and calendar listings.
