Caret Provost FROM:Elaine Hedges Coordinator of Women's Studies Professor of English DATE:March 10, 1993 Dear Bob, I regret the misunderstanding incurred by my way of proceeding regarding the Women's Studies Twentieth Anniversary Dinner. I was not aware that I was expected to consult you before talking with President Smith. Certainly, no personal slight was intended. As a Program Coordinator I have, over the years, occupied a somewhat ambiguous position--often, but not always, treated as the equivalent to a department chair, and not always privy to all necessary information about funding sources and proper channels. Even now it isn't always clear who has special budgets, and for what purposes or events it is appropriate to go to different sources. In addition, under the previous Provost, Women's Studies was encouraged to deal directly with the President. Since, when I did approach President Smith, he so readily agreed to the idea of a dinner and offered to subsidize it, suggesting that I go to you if and when I discovered that additional funds might be needed, I assumed I was following an acceptable procedure--one that, by his way of responding, he implicitly countenanced.
