TOWSON STATE UNIVERSITY MEMORANDUM Date Feb 5, 1993 To: Annette Chappell, Dean From: Elaine Hedges SubJect: Graduate work in Women's Studies The Women's Studies program, after discussion with Fred Arnold, is submitting a new, 600 level course, Independent Study, to be offered under the Master of Liberal Art degree. At the same time we are submitting several of our existing courses for approval to be offered on the 500 level. If the new course and the change in status for existing courses are approved, we shall have sufficient offerings to enable a student to create a Women's Studies focus within the MLA degree. we've had occasional inquiries or requests from students who have indicated they would like such a focus and I've been working with one student who seems seriously interested. In any case, we decided we could make the option available without too much additional strain on the Women's Studies faculty. Presumably, any faculty member directing an independent study project on the graduate level would get credit for it toward eventual released time, as they currently do for directing undergraduate independent study projects. (Does one get double credit for directing a graduate-level course?!) I wanted to inform you of this new development. If you'd like a list of the courses we propose to offer on the SOO level and/or a description of the new course, Independent Study, I'll be happy to send them.
