Sheets, Co-Chairs, Committee on the Status of Women SUBJECT: Figures on Salary Adjustments [Handwritten: true]I);~ Attached are two charts which summarize the data you , aveAon salary adjustments; the first summarizes by rank and sex, the second by degree . In view of the figures which we presented to you in the Spring, 1972, showing that women 's salaries lagged behind those of men at every rank, we are concerned that only 42 .6% of the money went to women . We would like to make the following additional observations as a result of tiny of the data : (2) We feel that your decision to consider only inequities of $1,000 or more worked a hardship on faculty in the lower two ranks (Assistant Professor and Instructor) . At these ranks, smaller amounts of money are involved, both in absolute terms and in differences between steps on the salary scale . Therefore, a differential of $500 may be a gross inequity for an Instructor, but minor for a Professor. Note on chart I that at the Assistant Professor level, women received $300 of the $16,900 given for salary adjustments . Since men at the Assistant level received $4,800 in adjustments, this will raise the median for men at the o~e and only rank at wiich women had salary parity (because of superior qualifications, we might add) . [Handwritten: true]We are disappointed that only ten persons who received a promotion received a salary adjustment; none of these adjustments even approached the sum recommended in the Academic Council document of Feb. 22, 1971. This only magnifies the inequities, and creates a larger number -of cases to be rectified. Although the existing salary scale does allow for enormous disparities (we have $13,350 Professors, $16,800 Associates, and $15,000 Assistants), we ~uld hope that it is your intention to increase the significance of rank by working vi.thin a more consistent and fairer range, a range attainable only by rewarding promotion with a substantial salary increase .
