DATE: February 27, 1985 TO: Dean Annette Chappell FROM: Sara Coulter and Elaine Hedges SUBJECT: Future Secretarial and Release Time Needs for the Women's studies Program Towson's three year FIPSE funded project to integrate the new scholarship on women into the curriculum is currently at its midpoint. As codirectors of the project we are looking ahead to the termination of its outside funding, in August 1986, and to the university support that will be essential if the activities begun under the project are to be continued and extended, as they should be. Acceptance of the grant by the university assumed the responsibility for some continuation of the work, since such grants are awarded with the understanding that the insititution will provide support beyond the initial stages. Moreover, such continuation and extension of our work is expected by now both by the large number of Towson faculty involved in the grant and by a growing number of institutions, both local and national, who are increasingly sharing in and dependent upon our work. We see ourselves as at a crucial turning point in our work in Women's Studies and curriculum development at Towson. After much careful assessment, therefore, we have concluded that, in order for work to continue in the future, we must request two forms of institutional support: the services of a full-time secretary to be attached to the Women's Studies program, and three hours of additional release time for administration. Without these supports not only shall we be unable to continue the momentum we have begun; we shall be unable to do much more than continue the present Women's Studies program at a minimal level of activity.
