Towson State University College of Liberal Arts Date: December 7, 1989 To: Provost Caret From: Annette Chappell, Dean, College of Liberal Arts Subject: Women's Studies Institute (Center for the Study of Women and Education) Attached are several documents concerning the establishment of the Center for the Study of Women and Education (the new working name for what we formerly were referring to as the "Women's Studies Institute"). The first document is the prospectus for the Center itself, including organization, activities, and an outline of budgetary needs. Thus far, the only thing "funded" for FY91 startup of the Center is the Director's position, and even that is being advertised as "contingent on state funding." The most problematic -- and highly important -- budgetary need is a secretarial position. The Women's Studies program has only a half-time secretary, so no clerical help can be expected from that area; the FIPSE grant is ending in June, so the contractual FIPSE project secretary will not be available to help. The provision of a secretarial position, as well as a modest operating budget, will be essential to getting the Center off the ground. The second document is a summary of the accomplishments of the Women's Studies program. The third document is a preliminary description of one project the Center might undertake, the establishment of a national clearinghouse on curriculum infusion (aka "mainstreaming") projects. To establish a clearinghouse would obviously require additional funding, including an additional administrative position. One avenue to explore would be to try to fund the clearinghouse through an endowment or a combination of endowment and grant funds. Given our expertise in curriculum infusion and TSU's emphasis on applied research, the clearinghouse concept is "a natural" for us.
