You remember that one of the motivations for requesting the joint appointment with Elementary Education was to satisfy the Ford Foundation’s concern, when we got the grant, that our current Women’s Studies faculty is too homogeneous. On the other hand, the proposal we floated of a possible joint appointment in Women’s Studies and Latin American history was greeted with some dismay, since there was fear that Women’s Studies might appear to have instigated the idea (when in fact, it came as a surprise to them) and to be somehow encroaching on other departments without appropriate consultation and preparation. Since Women’s Studies is an enhancement area and has the highest part-time utilization percentage in the university (and was therefore my #3 priority in the staffing plan), I do feel strongly that they ought to get a search this year, but I am not at all sure the forced joining of my #2 and #3 positions to create a single joint appointment in Women’s Studies and Latin American history is the wisest way to proceed.
