Memo from Annette Chappell to Norma Long, 1984

wm stud June 26, 1984 Norma Long Annette Chappell Proposed revisions to the second bachelor's program for women Norma, I have reviewed the proposal Sue Maples sent you, and I'm really not sure I agree with the premise she outlines in her second paragraph. When we originally constructed the program we included those courses in psychology, sociology, and women's studies because those specific courses contained material which we felt would help women cope with being managers--that is, these courses provided reinforcement of managerial and behavioral coping, not what Sue seems to think of as a liberal arts emphasis in the program. Please also understand that the reason 45 credits were required and the reason so many disciplines were included also had to do with the fact that this is a program under the General/Liberal Studies umbrella. If Sue wants to turn this into a track within the bachelor's degree in business administration, that makes it something quite different. However, General Studies programs are supposed to be interdisciplinary, and Sue's outline, making almost all the courses business administration courses, does not preserce the interdisciplinary aspect nor does it provide 45 credits. I am also concerned that apparently Sue believes that writing is only necessary for those focusing on business communications. It seems to me that any second bachelor's student who did not have a second writing course in their first bachelor's program ought to have one in their second bachelor's program. I guess what it boils down to is that if a woman wants a second bachelor's degree simply in business administration, she can come back and get one. If we are going to offer a second bachelor's specifically tailored for women who wish to go into management, I would like to see something beyond Women in Perspective in the program to show that it is indeed specifically designed for women desiring to make a career change. I hope this memo doesn't sound too carping, but I do have some real reservations about the proposal as it now stands. AC/DD
