Towson State University College of Liberal Arts Date: July 10, 1990 To: Jo-Ann Pilardi From: Annette Chappell, Dean, College of Liberal Arts Subject: a "Women in Politics" course Since it is ultimately our hope to increase the participation of the Political Science Department in the Women's Studies Program and to add a joint appointment between the two, I suggest that you discuss with Eric Belgrad any course you wish to create in that area, even if it would have a WMST rather than POSC prefix. I can't stress too strongly the importance of keeping that relationship in good repair. I suggest also that you consider carefully the rather different things which might be meant by the title "Women in Politics" (the influence of women in the electorate, women as politicians, "women's issues" in recent political campaigns, women politicians in Maryland, etc. etc.) and consider alternate titles (e.g., there might eventually be a POSC course called "Women in Politics" but the more immediate course might be one in WMST with a different title). My general feeling right now is that the title "Women in Politics" should be reserved for a POSC course with strong academic bias, and that if we hire Cathy to teach a course, it should probably have another, less all-encompassing title. As to hiring Cathy, I would want to think hard about her background if she doesn't have a masters' degree, and I would want to see a syllabus of what she is proposing. Are you going to put this through as a new course proposal, or were you thinking of a "Topics in Women's Studies" slot for it? Cathy, as long as she remains in the Senate, would also have to consider carefully whether her teaching at TSU would be regarded by her colleagues or ours as any conflict of interest, since she has responsibilities on fiscal committees which influence TSU's budget.
