Date: May 1, 1990 To: Jo-Ann Pilardi Towson State University College of Liberal Arts From: Annette Chappe11, Dean, College of Liberal Arts Subject: item for the next issue of 'The Women's Studies News Exchange' Clarification: Major vs. Department The prospectus/proposal process alluded to in Elaine Hodges's column in Vol. 1, No. 1, is our bid to make Women's Studies a free-standing major, rather than a "concentration" within the General Studies interdisciplinary major. While off oring a free-standing major can be regarded as a first step toward dcpartrncnwl status, there is currently no formal proposal for departmental status under consideration. The prospectus for a major has been approved by the University of Maryland System, and now Women's Studies must prepare a full proposal (a lengthy and very comprehensive document), which must then be approved by the College of Liberal Arts Curriculum Committee, the University Curriculum Committee, the University Senate, the University of Maryland System, and the Secretary of Higher Education. This approval procedure will take eight to ten months after completion of the full proposal. Only when the proposal has been fully approved can we prepare a plan for moving to departmental status.
