Towson State University MEMORANDUM Date May 25, 1983 TO: Faculty Development Committee FromL Sara Coulter and Elaine Hedges, Women's Studies Subject: Report on workshops to mainstream women's studies in American history and literature We want to thank you for your generous support of our project for mainstreaming women's studies. With the funds you provided, we have been able to conduct two workshops, one in American History and one in American Literature. Each workshop was composed of six faculty who volunteered to participate plus a faculty coordinator exuerienced in women's studies. Sara Coulter also attended each workshop session as an observer and project director. Each group met for five, ninety minute sessions includinfZ one with a consultant--Lois Banner from George Washington University for History and Paul Lauter from the State University of New York at Old Westbury for Literature. Half of the cost of the consultants was paid by matching funds from the Wellesley Consulting Prof[ram. In addition to the workshop sessions, the consultants lectured to a section of the introductory survey and gave a public lecture onen to the whole university. Each workshop participant was provided with several selected books purchased with the grant funds and with numerous sel~cted articles and bibliogranhies provided by Women's Studies. At the final meeting of the semester each workshop member selected an area of s~ecial interest relevant to the introductory survey in which to read over the summer. The fall sessions of the workshons will be devoted to reports on this reading and to discussion of how material on women can be incornorated into the introductory surveys.
