Towson State University MEMORANDUM Date March 14, 1983 From: Sara Coulter, Women's Studies Subject: Lecture by Paul Lauter, consultant on women and minorities in American Literature, March 21, 2 n.m., Cook Library, 4th floor, Director's Office Paul Lauter, Professor of American Studies from the State University of New York at Old Westbury, will be on campus Monday, March 21, to serve as a consultant on mainstreamin~ the new scholarshin on women into American literature survey courses. Professor Lauter will consult with the Mainstreaming Workshop in American Literature currently reviewing research on women. While on campus. Professor Lauter will lecture to an American literature class and nresent a review of women and minorities in American literature at a session onen to all faculty, staff, and. students at 2 p.m. in Cook Library, 4th floor, Director's Office. Please bring this opnortunity to the attention of colleagues and students. Professor Lauter directs "'Reconstructing American Literature," a FIPSEfunded ~roject at the Feminist Press, aimed at ~roducin~ syllabi, course materials, and texts which include feminist and minority scholarship and writings. A major result of this project will be a new antholon of American literature. He directed a two-week institute at Yale i.n .rune 1982 on theoretical and practical issues connected with transforminp: courses in American literature and has consulted on many occasions for colleges and secondary schools, particularly in literature but also with ;reference to the. whole range of new scholarship on women. He is co-author with Florence Howe, of a monograph, "The Impact of Women's Studies on Curriculum and Campus," (National Institue of Education, 1980) and author of a monop:rai;>h on "Faculty and Title IX," and of '"The Origins of the American Literary Canon--A Case History from the Twenties." He was an evaluator of an MLA project on teaching women's literature from a regional perspective, and has reconstructed the entire sequence of courses in American literature at Old Westbury.
