- Description
- According to legend, Guanyin vowed to never rest until all sentient beings were freed from the cycle of reincarnation. In order to assist, Amida Buddha gave Guanyin a thousand arms to reach out to all of the suffering. An ivory figure of Guanyin in her many-armed form. Guanyin (Avalokitesvara) is the Bodhisattva of Mercy and Compassion. This multi-armed figure is a tantric or esoteric form of Guanyin. The objects he is holding are Buddhist emblems that include cymbals, a conch shell, rosary, vase, lotus, umbrella, bell, spears, and alms bowl. Of his innermost arms, one is raised with the hand in a gesture of exposition, Vitarak Mudra, and two are brought together with the hands in Anjali Mudra, a gesture of offering or adoration.
