Letter from Orrielle Murphy to Kenneth Masters

October 30, 1964 Dictated 10/24/64 Kenneth Masters, President SGA Box 46 R Orrielle Murphy Resolutions passed in the Student Government Association Senate, October 13, 1964 Your resolution that the Senate recommend allocating time ince monthly for the purpose of general student assemblies was of extreme interest to me. During the early years of my tenure at Towson, One hour a week was scheduled for student activities of various sorts. The time seemed not to be wisely used by the majority of students. Attendance at class meeting was no better. Most students were to be found in the College Centre. Reserving a time became increasingly difficult for the Registrar's Office. For example, if the meeting was scheduled at 10 o'clock on Wednesday, this meant that the rhythm of Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10 o'clock was seriously impeded. Pressure mounted among the faculty to the effect that this was a wasted hour since many seemed to use it for a coffee break. Students were in accord and the hour was disbanded. As colleges grow in size, I believe you will find that there seems to be less and less chance for scheduling an hor when all would be free. Originally, at Towson, we were able to schedule many noon meetings since everyone had the same lunch hour. I am well aware of the dilemma of various worthy college groups who find it difficult to establish quorum at meetings. I shall submit your resolution atthe next meeting of the Administrative Council for further discussion. OM/kg P.S. 11/2/64 - Dean Hill brought the matter up at Administrative Council. The minutes of the meeting say it will be referred to the Department Chairmen. There seems to be very little possibility that the arrangement can be made.
