I sent a questionnaire to the county superintendents last year, asking if they thought we should continue the summer session. The majority replied that they thought we should. Their estimate of the number in attend¬ ance was almost 400, but the actual enrolment was 236. Probably the forces operating against a large enrolment are: the summer sessions held at The Johns Hopkins University and the Uni¬ versity of Maryland; the ambition of most supervisors to have their teachers go outside of the 3tate for courses similar to those they them¬ selves have had; and the fact that teachers have an idea they can not get college credit for normal school work as they can for work at the universities. I myself have not found out officially that we do re¬ ceive credit, but I am rather judging that if a university like Colum¬ bia is still giving credit for three successive Baltimore County Insti¬ tutes as equal to one summer session on their own canpus. it would seem to me that we should assume they would give credit for our work. How¬ ever. I will find out by correspondence whether this is taking too much for granted. Last year we gave thirty courses for elementary teachers, ten of which would have served high school teachers, and the Hopkins gave about twenty-two , I think, for elementary teachers.
